Club Regatta Fleet

This year at Volvo Cork Week, we are introducing a Club Regatta Fleet for all boats that have not yet entered due to possible time or crew constraints.

The Club Regatta Fleet will race on the Thursday and Friday of Volvo Cork Week, allowing them to partake in the famous Harbour race on the Thursday and join in with Fleet C on the Friday to do 2 races. The entry fee for the Class will be €75 and prizes will be awarded in IRC, ECHO and White Sail.

KINGSTOWN TO QUEENSTOWN FEEDER RACE.

In 1860 the first ever ocean yacht race in the United Kingdom was held from Kingstown (Now Dun Laoghaire) to Queenstown (Now Cobh). It is reported that the winner of the race was paid a prize of £15 at the time and all competing boat got a bursary of 10/6 each. The winner of the first race was a Schooner Kingfisher owned by Cooper Penrose Esq. The race was held on the 14th of July 1860 and had sixteen boats racing. This year at Volvo Cork week we are going to hold the race again for any boat wishing to take part and the winning boat will be awarded a first prize of a cheque for €15 mounted and framed, …

Non-Spinnaker Appendix A is removed.

To all Non Spinnaker Competitors for Volvo Cork Week 2016. The OA has decided to remove Appendix A from the Notice of race for Volvo Cork 2016, This Appendix covered the restriction on sail material in white sail classes for VCW 16. It was decided to remove this restriction and instead to split the non spinnaker classes into two classes. Both classes will still race together on the same course but will get separate results after racing and overall the class split will be decided by the OA before the regatta begins and published online. This is the same system that was used for the 2014 addition of Volvo Cork Week. Apologies for any confusion caused by this late change …

ISA Try Sailing Challenge

The inaugural ISA Try Sailing Invitational will take place this July, hosted by the Royal Cork Yacht Club (RCYC), Crosshaven, Co. Cork, as part of the highly successful Volvo Cork Week from July 10th to 15th. It represents one of a number of initiatives under the ISA’s Try Sailing banner aimed at introducing as many people as possible to the joys of sailing.

Irish Quarter Ton Cup at Volvo Cork Week

The Irish Quarter Ton Cup will also be held at Volvo Cork Week 2016. In the 1980’s and 90’s the then J Class raced every week in the RCYC and was made up of many different quarter tonners so many people got their first experience of sailing in a quarter tonner. The Irish Quarter Ton Cup in 2016 will not only crown a national champion but the winner will also be eligible for a class European Medal and will be in with a chance to win best overall boat of the European Championship. Volvo Cork Week 2016 is looking forward to welcoming quarter tonners from all over Ireland and the UK to compete this year.…
